James August Coursey was born in 1836 in Maryland and was the oldest of Rev William Riddell Coursey and Mary Ann Sheetz Coursey's 10 children.

He was in the Independent Battery B, Pennsylvania Light Artillery during the Civil War.

He enlisted in Chambersburg August 30, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh October 11 as a private with Independent Battery B, Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on Dec 20, 1863 in Chattanoga, Tennessee and honorably discharged with his battery October 12, 1865. Discharged in Victoria, Texas. James married Sarah Emily Smith. They had two children:
Ora Ellen Coursey who married Osborn Reed and John Wilbur Coursey who married Estelia "Stella" Marie Robinson. After James Coursey passed away, Sarah married William Sanford Reed the widowed father of Osborn Reed..

James was a confectioner by trade...
