Louise Booher Cannon, 87, of Armstrong, died Feb. 5, 2008, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
She was born March 3, 1920 in Armstrong, a daughter of Charles and Mary Ann Obenland Booher. She was the oldest native-born female resident in the town. She married Charles N. Cannon on December 25, 1942, at a service performed by his father, a Methodist minister in Portland, Arkansas. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Susan Cannon and fiance Garland Gibson; daughter, Celia Gorleski and husband Joseph; grandchildren, Erick Adams, Lydia Adams, Melanie Gorleski, Laura Gorleski and Lyla Gideon; great-grandchildren, Morgan Ray and Lyssa Gideon, all of Texas; brothers, Lester Booher of Armstrong and Glen Booher of Pitcairn, Pennsylvania; sister, Ruby Winnett of Livonia, Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Charles and Harold Booher and a sister, Mary Ruth Miller.
Mrs Cannon lived briefly in Albany, Georgia and Nagoya, Japan, as the wife of a career serviceman.
She retired from civil service in 1983 after working at Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, for 20 years. The Lord was her strength and her companion. She was a lifetime member of the Armstrong United Methodist Church, she was president of United Methodist Women, and she taught Sunday School and Bible School.
She actively pursued her family's genealogy, was the resident town historian and wrote a book about the history of her church for its 150th anniversary celebration.
She was active in PTA, she was co-chairman of the Armstrong Centennial Committee in 1976 and served as an election judge for many years. She also collected antiques, sold collectible items at flea markets and enjoyed QVC.
Louise was a proud, devoted and generous wife and mother and deeply loved her entire family, friends and cats. She never met a stranger. Her greatest joy was giving to others selflessly and she preferred to do so anonymously whenever possible. She was a strong fun-loving woman who never gave up on anyone or anything, even when facing illness and adversity. She has now gone home to live with her Heavenly Father.
