She was the daughter of Elijah Lee Steele & Cordelia L Burton. She was married April 26, 1916, to Claude McGinnis. Their children were Violet (Tomlinson), Helen (Brooks), James William, Richard & Peggy Rita (Rogers) McGinnis.
My grandmother was in her 50's when I was born and over the year's I learned she had been raised by the Miller family who had several boy's and wanted a girl so they took her in as a small baby. I don't believe they ever adopted her.
As I have been doing my family research I came across a puzzle. Grandma's mother died in 1900 when she was an infant. Supposably why she was raised by a different family, maybe because her father was so overwhelmed at the time and with other young children in the home he thought it best this other family raise her, I just don't know. The puzzle is when grandma was well into her 70's her birth records were needed and sent off for. They stated she was born in 1899. Grandma had always told me she remembered her age by the year she was born 1900 and whatever year we were in passed her birth day March 19 was how old she was. Well according to her birth records she was born in 1899 a year older than she thought and the year 1899 was used on her gravestone. I think grandma was right because as I found the grave side where her parents were buried I noticed they had a baby girl named Ethel born on March 31, 1899 and she died in August of the same year at 4 months old. Now eigther there was some confusion with the names Edith & Edna or the birth dates were wrong since grandma's birth was in March also or possibly Edith was a twin. I tend to believe Grandma was born in 1900 and her mother died less than a month after her birth.
Grandma was fun, she was almost like a big kid herself. She would let us play beauty shop on her. We'd do her hair and put make-up on her, paint her nails and she would just laugh when she looked in the mirror and seen the results. Grandma was very talented on the piano also. She learned to play as a young child and could make those keys honky talk, one of my favorite's was "Ball And A Jack". She sometimes played the organ at the local skating rink in Alexander for the skaters. Her & Grandpa also liked to play domino's and I learned to play also very young. As grandma aged she slipped into what some people call a second childhood, she would forget things and do things that didn't seem normal for someone her age, but I loved her just the more. Rest in Peace Grandma, I miss and love you.
