THE STANDARD, Thursday 4 Oct 1888, from microfilm in the Clarksville Library, Reel 2002-1: Last Saturday Mrs. Robert Nance who lives on Milt Bailey’s place, three miles northeast of town, was washing clothes. She sent her little girl five years old to the spring to bring some water, telling her son, who was some years older than the girl, to go along with her and dip the water up for her, but the boy instead went off in some other direction, and the little girl went to the spring alone with a tin vessel of some kind, to get the water, and it is supposed that after filling the vessel with water it became so heavy that it pulled her in head foremost. The mother becoming alarmed at the length of time the child stayed, ran to the spring and discovered that she had fallen in. Her cries attracted the attention of Mr. Ward who lives several hundred yards distant, and he ran to the spring, but before he could reach the child it was dead. The child was found at the bottom of the spring with the vessel still grasped in its hands, and its head half buried in the mud. This is very sad, and the bereaved parents have the sympathy of the community.
