Served in the 2nd Missouri Cavalry, also known as "Merrill's Horse" under Col. Lewis Merrill. Went in as a private, mustered out as a corporal.

The regiment was organized at Benton Barracks, Missouri, where it spent a lot of time in the Missouri and Arkansas area. Eventually it went to Tennessee where it was involved in fighting guerrilas and used as escort for trains from Chattanooga to Atlanta.

Mustered out with regiment on 19 September 1865
