James Ackman, 75 years of age, a resident of Cape Girardeau county of nearly 50 years, died at his home near Neelys Landing at 10 a.m. Friday. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
Ackman was born in Kentucky. He was a veteran of the Civil war, taking part in a number of battles on the side of the North. Soon after the war he moved to Cape Girardeau county, settling near Neelys Landing where he had lived since.
He is survived by six children, three sons and three daughters. The sons, Tom, John and George Ackman, all live near Neelys Landing. The daughters are: Mrs. W.A. Bishop, who lives near Neelys Landing; Mrs. Marion Craft, of Whitewater; and Miss Laura Ackman, who lives in Natchez, Miss. There are a number of grandchildren.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at the New Bethel Baptist church. Interment was in the cemetery there.

Son of Thomas Jefferson and Polly Estissor Ackman, James Ackman was born in DeMossville, Kentucky. When the Civil War broke out he was enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. E, 7th Ky. Vol. Cav., Union on August 1, 1862 in Paris, Ky. Officially mustered into service on August 16, 1862 and promoted to the rank of Full Farrier (Blacksmith) on December 31, 1864. He served with his regiment from the time of his enlistment until the end of the war, with the exception of a short time, in 1863, when he returned home on sick furlough. James Ackman was mustered out on July 10, 1865 in Edgefield, Tennessee and returned to Kentucky.
