Lawrence J. Ahern, the Son of Edward Leo and Mary Rose (Hohenschied) Ahern.
"Larry" Ahern, 72, was a native of Akron, Ohio, a graduate of Buchtel High School and the University of Akron. While earning his Bachelor's degree in physical education was on the wrestling team. For more than twenty-five years he worked as Physical Education Director at the Jewish Center as well as a substitute teacher in the Akron Schools. Later he took a position with the Department of Human Services as a caseworker and eventually an administrative position.
His avid interest in sports led him to become a referee for basketball and an umpire for softball and baseball. In 1998 he was named to the Summit County Softball Hall of Fame for his service as umpire.
His true passion was for his Irish heritage. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and his contribution to several "Songs of Ireland" shows will long be remembered. His gravely voice and mastery of even the most obscure lyrics graced many an Irish pub or St. Patrick's Day gathering. He was also a square dance enthusiast. Other memberships include the Firestone VFW Post 3383.
Larry was survived by his wife, Amy Lou Spiker; son and daughter-in-law, William and Teresa of Akron; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Ahern and Paul Corney of Columbus; and granddaughter, Kendall.
