Ira enlisted in the Army March 31, 1917, serving as a Private First Class with the 18th Field Artillery in France and Germany before being honorably discharged August 25, 1919.

His headstone has an incorrect year of birth. Birth certificate shows August 25, 1896 in Selma Indiana. Ira's World War II draft registration confirms 1896 as does his 1900 Census entry.

Opal L. Jeffries, daughter of Ira and Mary Elizabeth Berry Gilland is buried at Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Find A Grave memorial number is 130429555.
