On Monday, May 2nd, 2011 Betty Jane (Miller) Huntington passed away after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bill Huntington, their three children, Joy, Don and Scott, daughter-in-law Libby, grandson John, granddaughter Mary Claire, her younger sister, Joy (Miller) Bridges of Victoria, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Betty was born on February 8, 1925 to Ernest and Sue Miller in Bishop, Texas where she lived until 1956. Growing up on the family farm with her brother, Ray Miller, and sister, Joy, she attended Driscoll schools until her junior and senior years when she graduated from Bishop High School. Her family was active in the First Methodist Church of Bishop. She attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, TX until World War II broke out, when she became a civil servant and worked for the Naval Air Station in Kingsville, where she met her husband, Bill, a Navy pilot. In 1948, Betty and Bill made their home in Bishop where Betty was active in Beta Sigma Phi, an international women's social, cultural and service organization, the Harden Study Club and many church activities, as she and Bill were instrumental in the planning and building of the "new" First Methodist Church of Bishop.
Being transferred with Celanese, Betty and Bill moved to Baytown, Texas where they have lived in the Lakewood subdivision since 1956, with the exception of three years when they lived in Wilmington, Delaware. Betty and Bill were founding members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where they were loyal servants and leaders, serving on many boards and committees over the years. Betty was a dedicated stay-at-home mom while her children were young and then worked at Travis Elementary for 10 years as the school librarian. Her kind and gracious manner positively affected not only her family and numerous friends, but also hundreds of schoolchildren over the years. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 6th at the Sterling-White Funeral Home in Highlands, Texas from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Baytown on Saturday, May 7th at 3:00 PM and the graveside service will be at Sterling-White Cemetery in Highlands immediately following. Donations may be made in Betty's name to St. Mark's UMC or to St. James House, where she and Bill have lived for the last few years.
