W. Murlene Riley passed away April 22, 2011. Murlene was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Goldthwaite, Texas, to Allen Elbert and Mary Elizabeth Weathers. Murlene sang and played the fiddle all through high school with the "Gloom Chasers" a dance band, and was a majorette with the high school marching band.

Murlene graduated from Roy High School in 1942. She went on to Highlands University as a music major. While she was there she sang with a Navy Band. Murlene left school to take a job at the State Capitol in Santa Fe until her marriage to Paul B. Riley Sr on July 15, 1945. Paul and Murlene raised four children: Paul B Riley Jr., Barbara Riley, George Riley and Brad Riley.

Murlene returned to Highlands in 1970 and graduated with a double major in business and art. She then taught school in Encino, Hobbs, Dulce, and Des Moines until her retirement. Murlene was instrumental in building and organizing the Senior Citizens in Des Moines. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Des Moines.

Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1998. Murlene is survived by her children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were April 25 at the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines with Pastor Adreana Coleman officiating. Burial was in the Des Moines Cemetery.
