Eleanor May Anderson

Age 84, died March 24, 1999. Eleanor was born June 18, 1914 in Tacoma, WA, to James Peacocke and Laura Wood Peacocke. In her youth she assumed the name of her stepfather, "Stephenson". She graduated from Tacoma's Lincoln High School and went on to work as a legal secretary for the law firm of Coffee, Fishburne & Denman. When John Coffee won election to the U.S. House of Representatives, Eleanor went to Washington, DC, as his secretary, where she spent the next four years. Later she returned to Tacoma where she worked during World War II at McChord Air Force Base, and then in the Federal Clerk's office where, following the war, she met John Anderson, who she married in 1949. Eleanor was always a kind, sweet and loving person. Not even the ravages of Alzheimer's disease in her last years could take that away. She loved her family and taught them her kind ways. She had a passion for reading and loved animals, gardening, doing genealogy and doing crossword puzzles. During her life she was active in the Democratic party, even serving for a time as a precinct committee person. Eleanor is survived by her loving husband, John; son Bill Anderson of Tacoma; her daughter, Judy (Don) Bishop of Edmonds, WA; two grandsons, David Bishop and Jeff Bishop of Edmonds, WA; and two sisters, Carol Hollywood of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Louise (Lyle) Walston of Burley, WA; as well as many wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Stephenson and James Peacocke, and one sister, Mildred Craig. For the last two years of her life, Eleanor resided at the Tacoma Lutheran Home, and the family would like to thank the many staff members there who took time to care for her and give her hugs. Memorials may be made in her name to the Tacoma Lutheran Home or to the Alzheimer's Association. Family graveside services will be held at 12:00 N on Tuesday, March 30th at the Haven of Rest Cemetery in Gig Harbor. Memorial services will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel at the Tacoma Lutheran Home. Arrangements by Lynn Funeral Home (253-272-2131).
