Born in Ireland, the son of Wesleyian minister Matthew Lanktree. He emigrated to the United States in 1832 where he became editor of the Knickerbocker .He and his brother-in-law, John L. O'Sullivan, founded the Georgetown Metropolitan and United States Magazine and Democratic Review.The pair were also appointed the official printers for the United States government. Langtree also created The Samuel D. Langtree American Pamphlets Collection, a resource of nineteenth-century history, politics, and culture. He died at Bacon's Castle, Surry County, VA . Interment at Congressional Cemetery 4 Dec. 1842
