Harvey Lee Garrett, 95, former resident of Eagar, went to be with the Lord after a short illness Feb. 27, 2011, in San Angelo, Texas. Harve was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Lebanon, Okla. to Henry and Jewel Garrett. The family moved from Oklahoma to Texas by horse and wagon in Harve's early childhood. As a young adult he worked on ranches and in the oil fields of Texas, eventually being hired by the Texas Company. Harve married Verda Grace Whetstone in 1938. They were longtime residents of Seminole, Texas, where their children grew up and attended school. Harve retired in 1981 after working 34 years for Texaco and in 1990 he and Verda moved to Eagar to be near their children and grandchildren. After his wife's death one year later, Harve remained in Eagar and became quite active in the community by volunteering his time at the Friendship Kitchen where he served up food and washed dishes alongside grand daughter, Denee' Baca. It was there he was given the nickname "Grandpa" by those he served. Harve also volunteered at the Round Valley Senior Citizen's Center, the local food bank, where he would help fill and distribute food boxes, and served as Marshal for several years in his local precinct. Harve was also a very active member of the Community Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the love and fellowship of his church family. He loved listening to the Bible on CD and enjoyed gospel music, especially the Gaither's. For many years he was the patriarch of a Christian men's prayer meeting that met every Monday morning at the Safire Restaurant. When he was no longer able to drive they began to meet at Harve's home over "day old" donuts and "Grandpa" coffee! Harve had a quick wit and was always ready to share an appropriate one-liner at just the right time. He loved to meet new people, share old memories and play games with friends and family. He also loved being in the White Mountains and getting together with family and friends as much as possible. In 2008, Harve moved to Brady, Texas to reside with daughter, Sue Tripp, and her husband, Charles. There he joined a new church family and made many close friends. He was quite content, counting his blessings every day, always ready to share his wealth of wisdom, knowledge and countless entertaining stories of days gone by. Harve was preceded in death by his wife, Verda; parents, three brothers and four sisters. He is survived by one brother, Homer C. Garrett, of Lindale, Texas; two sons: Ron Garrett (Carmen) of Eagar, and Ray Garrett (Janet) of Clarendon, Ark.; two daughters: Gwen Baze (Sidney) of Eagar, and Sue Tripp (Charlie) of Brady, Texas (formerly of Greer); 11 grandchildren, Donette Fox (Mike), DeDe Sipe (Matt), Denee Baca (Robert), Camella Baze, all of Eagar, Rhonda Garrett of Cave Creek, and Brant Tripp of Mesa, Wendy Garrett-Whiteside, Starla Reinhardt, Jessica Garrett-Cupp, all of Clarendon, Ark., Coy Garrett, of Texas, and Cody Robert of Texas. Very special to him were his 13 great-grand children, and 16 great-great grandchildren – the last being born on his 94th birthday! Harve is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews throughout Texas, Oklahoma and California. The heritage Harve leaves to his four generations and countless friends was exemplified in his Christian walk, his service to others and his sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with many throughout his years. A memorial service for Harvey Lee "Grandpa" Garrett, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Springerville.
