Son of Mathew and Louisa Couch.

John married Mary Jane Kay on February 10, 1850. They are living with John's parents, Mathew and Louisa, in the 1850 census. By the opening of the civil war, they were living in Arkansas and John enlisted in Company D, 33rd Arkansas Infantry. Since he was a mechanic in iron and wood, he worked in the Confederate Shop in Arkadelphia, Arkansas and then went along when the shop was moved to Marshall, Texas.

John bought land in 1869 and built a log home next to the highest elevation in Camp County, which eventually became known as Couch Mountain.
John, being a veteran mechanic, set up a grist mill on Greasy creek on Couch mountain. John and Mary Jane had 9 children, John Washington, William Marion, Julia Ann, Mary May "Missie" Samuel Harrison, Louisa Ella, Nancy Caroline "Callie", David Pinkney and Emma Delilah.

1870 census John can be found in Upshur County, Texas. Occupation: Blacksmith. With Mary Jane and children: John 17, William 15, Julia 12, Missie 10, Samuel 4, Ella 2 and Caroline 1.

1880 census John can be found in Camp County, Texas. Occupation: farmer. Wife, Mary Jane. Children listed are S.H. (Samuel Harrison) 14, L.E. (Louisa Ella) 11, N.C.(Nancy Caroline) 8, D.P.(David Pinkney) 6 and E.D. (Emma Delilah) 4.

***After John Marion's death in 1891, Mary Jane moved to Kaufman County, Texas, all except 2 of her children had moved to that area of Texas and she lived out her days there.

This tombstone is broken in several places making it very fragile. The top is very shaky and moves when touched. Some of the wording is worn and difficult to read.
