Dick VanLeuvan was born Februrary 4, 1920, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. Dick married Jean E. Coley on June 6, 1943 at Broadway Christian Church in Council Blufs, Iowa. He entered the Army and served aboard the USS Westminster Victory. Dick made seven round trips across the ocean, transporting troops and tanks to Antwerp, Belgium, returning with POWs. Dick workded in a steel mill in Hammond, Indiana, making tank turrets for the war. His service also took him to a POW camp in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. He worked for Omaha Standard in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Denver, Colorado, Wichita, Kansas and East St. Louis, Illionois, building truck bodies, and was later in sales. He retired from Sutherland Lumbar Company in 1985, after working in sales for 37 years. Dick would personally draft house plans, estimate lumber needs and help pick out each piece of lumber. He won trips to the Ozarks in paint contests at Sutherland. He was an avid golfer and passed along his passion for golf to his five grandsons. While golfing with his wife and friends at Elmwood Gold Course on August 7, 1982, he achieved a hole in one. He was a member of the Masons, the VFW, Elmwood Men's Golf Club, Willow Run and Crestwood United Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth; his sister, Fern Johnson; and his brother Robert. He is survived by his wife Jean, of 62 years; daughter Kathy Reiter, and son-in-law Ken; daughter Bobby Hicks, and son-in-law Bob; five grandsons, Brian Hicks and his wife Stacy, Aaron Reiter and his wife Carly, Adam Hicks and his wife Sara, all of Sioux Falls, Jason Hicks and his wife Trista of Henderson, Nevada, and Jared Reiter and his wife Chris of Omaha, Nebraska; and six great grandchildren, Miranda Hicks, Brianna Reiter, Nathan Hicks, Brandon Hicks, Jordan Reiter, and Reagan Reiter; and nieces and nephews.
