On 15 Feb 1846 Edward, 20, married Olive Carroll, 17, daughter of Russell and Phebe (Chaffee) Carroll, at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. They were enumerated in the 1850 US Federal census on 5 Sep 1850 at Lynn, MA, with two of their children.

On 2 Sep 1861 Edward A. Allen mustered into service with the 1st Company Massachusetts Sharpshooters, being credited to the quota of Lynnfield, MA. He was 35 years, 7 months and 15 days old.

On 2 Apr 1862 Edward ended military service with the 1st Massachusetts Sharpshooters at Falmouth, VA, being discharged for disability.

On 16 Feb 1864 Edward reenlisted, having received a bounty of $325. On 31 May 1864, at Jones' Farm, VA, Edward was erroneously reported killed in action.

On 28 Apr 1865 Olive, his wife, died at Lynn, MA, at age 36.

On 21 Oct 1868 his daughter, Emma F. Allen married William H. Eaton at Lynn, MA, in a first marriage for both. On 27 Dec 1869 his daughter, Julia Ann Allen married George E. Rand at Lynn, MA, in a first marriage for both.

On 27 Sep 1875 Edward, 49, remarried to Mary A. Shaw, 48, daughter of John and Sally (Curtis) Shaw , at Lynn, MA, in a second marriage for both. (She was the widow of Grant Carroll who died Aug 1864 at Andersonville.)

Edward was enumerated in the 1890 US Federal census, Veteran's Schedule in Jun 1890 at Lynn, MA, as having served in the 1st Co. Andrews Sharpshooters.

He applied for a veteran's pension on 26 Jan 1891, and received certificate number 796225. He was a member of General Frederick Lander G.A.R. Post #5, Lynn, MA.

On 4 Aug 1897 Mary A. Shaw, his second wife, died at Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 70.

On 3 Jan 1900, Edward was admitted at National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Togus, ME.
He died on 29 Aug 1903 at National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Togus, ME, and his body was shipped to Lynn. He was 77 years, 7 months and 11 days old.

He was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, MA, Gerdia Path, Lot-24, Grave-1, with his first wife.
