Mary Pierce Avary, 91, a longtime resident of Atlanta died April 8, 2004. Daughter of the late Alfred Mann Pierce and Bessie Almond Pierce, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephens Archer Avary, as well as two sisters, Carolyn Pierce Dillard and Susan Pierce Murray.

Mrs. Avary was a graduate of Emory University and the first female member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Cherokee Town Club. Mrs. Avary was active in her community. She was a longtime volunteer at the VA Hospital, the American Red Cross, and The High Museum of Art. Along with her two sisters she became an avid world traveler.

Surviving are her son, Stephens Archer Avary, Jr.; daughters, Harriet Avary Riviere of Paris, France, Jane Avary Barbour of Charlottesville, Virginia; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 niece and 1 nephew.

Graveside service held April 10 at Historic Decatur Cemetery with Dr. Albert Clarke officiating.
