Henderson (NC) Gold Leaf,
9 Nov 1899,
pg 2:

Died, at his home (Riven Oak)
near Middleburg, N.C., on
the night of the 18th of
October, 1899, in the
70th year of his age,
James Robinson Carroll.
Having known him intimately for
50 or more years, I think I knew him
as well as any one and am satisfied
that he talked to no one more freely
than he did to me, not only of
matters pertaining to this life
but the future.
I never knew a better man. A firm
believer in the Lord Jesus Christ
and the Christian religion, he came
as near living up to the great
fundamental and saving teachings
and injunctions of the Bible as
anyone I ever knew. On the
one hand utterly abhorring
anything like deceit,
dishonesty, covetousness,
selfishness,
etc., and on the other,
the very soul of honor
and uprightness, fully doing
his duty to his neighbor;
and full to the overflowing of
that greatest of all Christian
virtues: charity,
I feel and believe that he
is at rest.

He sought, nor cared,
a leader to be,
Nor was he led, by modern methods,
no not he;
But passing, through life
with motives the purest and best,
Humbly to his God,
he leaves the rest.
