Solomon Snow Smith enlisted and was mustered into the United States service as 1st Serg't Co. D, 3rd Serg't, Kansas Vol. Inft'y, July 25th, 1861. The company was afterwards consolidated and became Co. E of the 10th Reg't Kansas Vol. of which Co. he was promoted to 2d Lieut. in March 1863; was mustered out by reason of expiration of term of service Aug 18th, 1864; was same date, commissioned by President Lincoln as Capt. of Co. F, 18th Reg't US Colored Inft'y and mustered out in March 1866; was appointed Clerk of the Supreme Court of the State of Washington, Nov 10, 1889, on the admission of the state to the Union; held that position until March 3rd, 1891, when appointed Judge of the Superior Court; was re-elected in 1892 for a term of four years; declined to become a candidate in 1896; has practiced law ever since at this place."
Judge Sol. Smith of South Band occupied the Superior court bench at Chehalis last week and Judge A. E. Rice presided over the Pacific county justice mill. Both gentlemen are upright citizens who enjoy the confidence and esteem of their neighbors.
