Served with the Sixth Arkansas Infantry of the Confederacy. In 1863, he received a medical discharge for poor health, but he later joined the First Tennessee Heavy Artillery Regiment and engaged in the Battle of Shiloh and the siege of Vicksburg. He served untill May 1864. He married Charlotte McDonald January 6, 1864. They had five descendents: Edwin Purvis, Minnie L, George Harmond, Allen McDonald, and Ella Leona. In 1925, his son Allen was in bad health and Cicero accompanied him to Mineral Wells, Texas to take in the baths. Cicero at the age of 82, passed away and was interred in Elmwood Cemetery, Mineral Wells.
