David and Maria were in Powesheik in 1870, but removed to Armstrong Grove in 1872 with the family of his cousin, Ruth (Wood) Canon. He was a talented writer and sometimes wrote pieces for the newspaper in Estherville, Iowa.

The death of Mr. D. S. Canfield, of Armstrong Grove, Wednesday January 23d, was a shock to the entire community. He was well in the morning and did his chores as usual, and, after coming in to warm he seemed drowsy and when asked if he would go to bed, said no. After sitting there some time he felt worse and said they might help him to bed, and before they had reached him he had passed away. He has been a resident of Emmet county a good many years and was a much respected citizen. The relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
