He served in the Civil War, entering the service on 12-Aug-1862 at the age of 27, joining the 7th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, Company C. He was promoted to Corporal, took part in battles at Tupelo, Nashville, the Indian Wars, and witnessed the hanging of 38 Sioux Indians at Mankato on 26-Dec-1862. He was discharged 16-Aug-1865. He was listed as from Franconia (Chisago County, MN) and still on active duty when the 1865 MN state census was taken.
Carl moved to Kandiyohi County in 1869. On 1-Nov-1866 he had married Mary Porter, daughter of Anders J and Catharina Porter. After Mary's death in 1898, Carl moved into Atwater. He was a member of the Swedish Lutheran Church there for 56 years, since 1870, and was one of the church's first trustees.
