James was the son of George Washington Padgett & Mary Jane Amanda Mitchell.
He married Mary Elizabeth McIntyre on 5 October 1880 & they had 10 children: five boys and five girls. Four of the children were stillborn and unnamed. They are buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
The six children who survived birth included: James Perry 'JP,' Mary Sadona 'Dona,' Hilary Thomas, Ava Elizabeth 'Avie,' Julia Aver, and George Richard.
