ODESSA—Eliza Ann Alford went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at the age of 90 years old. Ann passed away in Cibolo at the home of her daughter following a lengthy illness.

Eliza Ann Bell Mitchell Alford was born March 9, 1911, in Cleburne County, Heflin, Ala. She moved with her parents, William Ritter Bell and Nancy Lou Ella Hunnicutt Bell, to settle in Post Oak near Paris, Texas, as a small child. She married Ernest Mitchell, father of her daughter, Billie Lou, in 1934. She married William Clarence Alford on Aug. 3, 1944, and he preceded her in death in 1982.

Ann was a longtime member of Crescent Park Baptist Church, which she loved and was active in Sunday school, WMU and Vacation Bible School. She served as chairman of the Benevolence Committee for many years and was involved in many other church activities. Ann was currently a member of the Cibolo Valley Baptist Church. She volunteered for many charitable organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes. Ann was a charter member of the Auxiliary at Odessa Regional Hospital where she had served as president, vice president and chairman of the Gift Shop. She volunteered her time weekly in the auxiliary gift shop until she became ill several years ago and had completed 25 years of volunteer service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Odessa also. Ann worked for many years as manager of the Sally Ann Dress Stores in Texas and Louisiana. She had lived in Beaumont, Kermit, Monahans and had been a resident of Odessa since 1959.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clarence Alford; her parents; and by four brothers, Howard Bell, Roy Bell, Jimmy Bell and Hugh Bell. She was also preceded in death by two half brothers, Charlie and Benjamin Bell.

She is survived by a daughter, Billie Lou Mitchell Tone and husband Gene of Cibolo, with whom she had made her home the past two years. Four grandchildren, Candy Ann Powell and husband Wid of Odessa, Melody Elaine Bamburg and husband Jerry of Corrigan, Chere Michelle Tone of Cedar Park and Timothy Andrew Tone of San Antonio, also survive her. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Christopher Powell and wife Krista of Weinert, Holly Powell Calvert and husband Raymond of Fort Worth, Jerrod Bamburg and Eliza Ann Bamburg of Corrigan, and a great-great-grandson, Dylan Scott Calvert of Fort Worth. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

"Bubber" as she was called by her grandchildren, who loved her dearly, had a quick smile, twinkling eyes and a gift of love for those around her. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Gene Tone, her son-in-law, pastor of Cibolo Valley Baptist Church, preached funeral services at Cibolo Valley Baptist Church in Cibolo on Monday, Jan. 7, 2002. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m. today, Jan. 8, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa.
