Paul E. Bechtold, 84, the founder and owner of Bechtold Plumbing and Heating, 502 4th St., died unexpectedly Saturday at Lancaster General Hospital of natural
causes.

He was the husband of Barbara Girvin Bechtold and lived at 233 N. Mary St. They were married for 55 years.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Abner and Florence Brodecker Bechtold. He was a lifelong resident of Lancaster.

Bechtold founded his plumbing and heating company in 1951. He was also the owner of the Lancaster Water Equipment Co. He retired in 1986.

A lifetime active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 500 Pearl St., he served on various boards and councils of the church.

He was also a member of the Wheatland Sertoma Club; the YMCA, where he served on the Facilitating Committee and the Campaign for Youth; and a former president of the Lancaster Plumbing and Heating Contractors Association.

Bechtold was an outdoorsman who enjoyed golf, and he loved reading historical books.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Paul G. Bechtold, the husband of Kay Bechtold, Lititz; a daughter, Marianne, wife of Guy S. Burkholder II, Lancaster; and was preceded in death by a son, John David Bechtold, who died in 1970.

He is also survived by three grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene, wife of William Spece, and Mary, wife of Raymond Snyder, both of Lancaster; and a brother, Harold Bechtold, husband of Mildred Bechtold, Lancaster.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Stover, who died in 1995; and Janet Suydam, who died in 1988; and one grandson.
