Henry James Nott was the son of Methodist Preacher James Nott and his wife Jane Child. Henry's father James built the Lingen Chapel which was opened in 1877 and is still in use today. Henry was educated at Westley College in Sheffield in the early 1870's. Wesley College provided a higher quality education combined with religious training in Methodism. Following his education Henry returned to The Farlands, married Emily Oxtoby. They would have five children. Henry would continue to live on the Farlands, his childhood home until his sudden death at the age of 50 in 1907.

Working for the Nott's on the Farlands was Annie Reta Marion Prince, a cousin of Henry's. She was the grandmother of the author of this memorial.

Henry's probate record reads:

NOTT Henry James of Moorehampton-park Herefordshire died 5 January 1907 Probate London 11 November to Humphry Thomas Nott farmer and Charles Oxtoby corn merchant Effects £2149 10s 2d
