EAST LIVERPOOL - H. Arthur "Lucky" Rice, 86, of Staunton Avenue died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at City Hospital.

Born Aug. 22, 1924, in Chester, a son of the late Hamer and Rose Rice, he was a lifetime area resident.

He was a truant officer for East Liverpool City Schools from 1973 to 1989 plus three additional years from 2003 to 2005. He also worked at Smith and Phillips Furniture Store as a carpet mechanic from 1946 to 1973.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the US Navy.

He was a former deacon at the Glenmoor Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Legion in Glenmoor, and, a former member of the Ruritan Club.

He designed the crest in the East Liverpool High School cafeteria floor, and he performed the tile work during construction of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association Clock Tower. He also helped in the construction of the tiled donor wall at the East Liverpool City Hospital.

Surviving is his wife, A. Berdina Boyd Rice, whom he married July 31, 1945.

Also surviving are two daughters, Cheryl Nalette-Taylor and her husband, Harold "Don" Taylor, of East Liverpool, and Shiela Louise Beresford and her husband, Robert, of Loveland, Ohio; and a son, Jan Rice and his wife, Catherine N. Fitzgerald-Rice of Durham, N.H.

There are eight grandchildren, Larry Rice, Kerry Napier, Major Kevin Nalette USAF, Dana Nalette, Brendan Beresford, Lauren Beresford, Emily Rice, and Sam Rice.

There are eight great-grandchildren, Hali Rice, Melanie Nalette, Dakota Nalette, Jessica Rice, Robert Nalette, Madison Rice, Yana Napier, and Maxem Napier.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence G. Rice, in 1983.

Also preceding him were six sisters and three brothers.

The family requests memorial contributions take the form of donations in his name to Dollars for Scholars, 517 Broadway, East Liverpool, OH 43920.

The Rev. Dr. Vel Vais of the church will conduct a service at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Burial is to be in Riverview Cemetery where the American Legion Post 442 Honor Guard of Salineville will accord full military honors. Family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center following burial.
