WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Merrill J. Kanowski, 91, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Baystate Medical Center. He was born in Springfield to the late John and Alexandra (Piaszczyk) Kochanowski. Merrill served his country with the United States Army Air Force during World War II from 1942-1946. Attaining the rank of Sergeant he received the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was employed by Western Mass Electric and worked in the control room as a dispatcher. Merrill was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church and a member of the American Legion. He was an avid bowler and golfer, scoring 2 holes in one. Merrill is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Antoinette M. (Russo) Kanowski, and his devoted daughters, Gail M. Dorazio and her husband, Joseph and Nancy A. Kingsbury and her husband, John, all of West Springfield. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren, Toni Cannalonga, Joey Dorazio, Gina Grabowski and Chris Kingsbury and his 2 great-grandchildren, Cody and Bella. Merrill's family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Neil Cudler for his kindness and care. A Funeral Service will be held for Merrill on Wednesday at 10 AM at the Toomey-O'Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St. West Springfield. Rites of Committal will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Agawam. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday morning from 9 AM - 10 AM at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in Merrill's name to the Jimmy Fund ATTN: Contribution Services, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445 or to the BHS Rays of Hope, P.O. Box 5141, Springfield, MA 01101.
