WILBRAHAM, Mass. -- Mitchell J. Mitus, born on February 8, 1926 died at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Wilbraham and lived there all his life except for the years that he spent in the Army Air Force. He was a veteran of World War II with duty as a bomber crew of the B-29 in the Pacific Area. His greatest joy was telling about the B-29 flight over the battleship Missouri when the Japanese treaty was signed. He was formerly employed at the former Wico Prestolite Plant for 31 years and at Long Radio until his retirement in 1994. He leaves his wife, Theresa J. (Bolduc) Mitus; three sons, Steven M. Mitus and his wife, Moira, and Peter M. Mitus and his wife, Teresa, residing in Westfield and Paul M. Mitus and his wife, Annie, residing in Agawam and one daughter, Nancy T. Coffey and her husband, Daniel, living in Westfield. He also has eight grandchildren, four girls and four boys and one great-granddaughter. He also leaves four sisters, Albina Bertheaume of Springfield, Dominica Jarvis of Ludlow, Nellie Lysik of Belchertown and Stella Davis of Palmer, all in the state of Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his daughter Christine Rose in 1992 and four brothers and two sisters. Private funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. from Nowak Funeral and Cremation Services, 15 Ludlow Ave., Springfield proceeding to the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery for burial with full military honors at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be Sunday, April 6, 2008 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Christine Mitus Rose Memorial Scholarship Fund.
