Mr. John West was born the 11th day of March 1852, near Renne, West Marie Parish, Bornholm Island, Denmark. On this island he lived his childhood days and early youth.” He immigrated to America in 1873, at the age of 21. He first settled in Warren Pennsylvania for about five years. He then turned west and landed in Jewell County, Kansas for a short stay. In 1879, he moved into Nuckolls County, Nebraska, near Hardy, where he bought a piece of land about two miles south of Ruskin, which was still the West home 46 years later, at the time of his death.

On February 26, 1886, he married Anna Marie Pedersen. Their union was blessed with seven children, all who were living at the time of his death: Larsina A. “Sina”, Petra O., Alma A., Magnus P., Olga B., Herman Adolph, and Delmar K. At the time of his death, he had sixteen grandchildren.

John and Anna West were originally members of St. John’s Danish Lutheran Church, near Spring Creek, but when Bethany Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1893, St. John’s Church merged into the Bethany Church. The West family became members of Bethany and have remained faithful and willing to “bear the burdens of the local church as well as the Synod in general.” The children were confirmed at Bethany Danish …and John was actively involved. He was vice president of the church, for twenty-two years he helped lead the singing in the church services and for nine years he led the introductory and closing prayers of the congregation.

John suffered with an ailment for five years and had entered the hospital in Superior, anticipating an operation, which did not take place because he grew too weak to perform it. The end of his earthly life came Sunday morning, Sept. 20,1925 at 3:00 pm.
