JAMES WILLIAM BUCHANAN

James William Buchanan, who had been ill the past two years suffering with paralysis and heart trouble, died Monday, December 5th at his home here.
He was the son of Dr. John Henry Buchanan and Margaret Petway Buchanan, and was born in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 20, 1858. He was married to Miss Lovie Curfman January 10, 1881. To this union five children were born; James Maury, who died at the age of 31, November 18, 1914; and Miss Lutie Buchanan, Mrs. E.C. Allen, Mrs E.D. Spillers, and W. Irl Buchanan, who survives with his wife and four grandchildren, J.W., Jr., Margaret Sue and John Lynn Buchanan, and Robert Buchanan Allen.
Mr. Buchanan was converted and joined the Methodist Church Aug. 22, 1887 of which he was a consistent member to the end. He came to Texas with his family in 1903, and engaged in the mercantile and cotton business for five years. After selling his interest in the merchant, he devoted his time to the cotton business and continued in this until his health failed two years ago. He was confined to his bed much of the time, but maintained a wonderful patience at all times, and always welcomed his many friends who called to see him.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon by Rev. T.J. Beckham of Dallas, assisted by Rev. W.K. Strother and Rev. Geo. D. Dickinson of Garland. He was buried by the Masonic Lodge. Active pall bearers were H.W. Jones, J.I. Williams, J.O. Williams, J.M. Hamilton, O.E. McKenzie and L.L. Caldwell.
Honarary pall bearers were M.H. Wolfe, Robt. Mayer, Dick Boulware, Rev. T.J. Beckham, J.H. Isom and Claude Joyce all of Dallas; W.B. Hindman, H.W. Bendell of Greenville and Ed Hindman of Rockwall; M.C. Raney, H.B. Coyle, T.J. Swim, W.H. Gandy, J.N. Floyd, S.D. Smith, G.W. Newman, A.M. Spillers, C.R. Lyles, Carl Lyles, W.C. Jamison, Dr. B.H. Freeman, Dr. J.C. Armstrong, Dr. J.H. Ogle, E.P. Squibb, A.D. Jackson, Pete Corley, A.R. Davis, W.A. Holford, G.L. Davis and W.K. Maxey.
Mr. Buchanan came from an old pioneer family of Tennessee and was an only child. His great grandfather, Major John Buchanan, was a well known figure in Tennessee history and his picture now hangs in the capitol at Nashville as one of the founders of the state.
Mr. Buchanan was known as a dependable man in all transactions. His honesty and integrity could always be relied upon. He loved his home, and everything that came under his jurisdiction received the best of care.
His family has the deep sympathy of their friends in their loss, but they have the assurance that the spirit that inhabited his body is at peace with God who gave it, and they have done all that earthly hands could do to soothe him and allay his pain. His memory will long live to bless the community of which he was a part for almost a quarter of a century.
Among the near relatives, who attended the services, were Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Steward and daughters Margaret and Ann of Wills Point, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Curfman and family and Mrs. Charles Curfman of Rockwall.
The many lovely floral offerings were mute evidence of the high esteem in which this good man was held.
