Oneida News –Chas. Pettit and son of Deerfield, Ohio, Freeman Pettit and family of Independence, and a son-in-law, Mr. Baxter, attended the funeral of their mother, Mrs. Pettit.
Another of the old residents of Nemaha County passed from the scenes of earth last Wednesday morning at six thirty o'clock at her home in Oneida at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 19 days. Anna Sophia Wilhelm was born in Greenford, Mahoning County, Ohio, March 9, 1832. She was united in marriage to William D. Pettit April 29, 1855.
To this union five children were born, George T. of Oneida; Charles F. of Deerfield, Ohio; Mary Alice, who died April 17, 1913; Austin S. of Oneida; and Freeman L. of Independence, Kansas. The husband, William D. Pettit, died February 23, 1906. In the spring of 1881 the family located on a farm one and a half miles west of Oneida and in 1896 moved into Oneida. Mrs. Pettit was a devoted and most consistent and patient Christian character and member of the Christian church. The neighbors who knew her best are unanimous in speaking of her fine spiritual qualities and her children fulfill the promise of holy writ in that they rise up to call her blessed. The deceased was a daily and diligent student of the bible and a great admirer of the old Christian hymns.
For several years she has been quite feeble but not until the past few weeks was her condition at all alarming. The natural decline of old age and the gradual weakening of the body caused her at last to lie down as if to pleasant dreams and without the slightest struggle she passed to the reward of the faithful.
Funeral services were conducted by Wm. Oeschger of Lincoln, Nebr., at the Christian Church in Oneida on Friday, July 30, 1920. Interment was in the Oneida cemetery by the side of her husband. The entire community extends their sympathy to this family in their sorrow.
