Private James Edward Adkins was born "Elijah Adkins" on August 3, 1893 in the Toxteth area of Liverpool England. He was the son of Elijah Adkins and Mary Ann Ellison.
At age 12, Elijah was immigrated to Canada by Louisa Birt aboard the S.S. Virginian with a party of children from the Liverpool Sheltering Home. He landed at Quebec City on June 1, 1906, and was taken with his party to the Knowlton Distribution Home at Knowlton, Quebec.
At the time of the 1911 Canada Census, he was living and working at Saltcoats, Saskatchewan. He gave his address as Colonsay, Saskatchewan when he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force as "James Edward Adkins" on April 8, 1916.
