He took off from Warmwell, England on a strafing mission to Paris-Dreux-l'Aigle area, France. Forced to bale out at 2150hrs after his aircraft caught fire about 20 north of Houdan in the Seine Valley, east of Dreux, during a dog-fight with FW190s. Aircraft crashed at Thiveral, about seven miles north-west of Versailles. He died of burn wounds six days later.
