Private Daniel Izea "Buck" Paulk, born 12 Aug 1915, was the son of Daniel and Rutha Eunice "Emma" (Luke) Paulk of Berrien County, Georgia.
In the 1920 census, 4-year-old Buck is living in the household of his maternal grandparents, JG and Lizzie Luke, with his mother and siblings John 11, Elizabeth 7, and Elijah 1, in Greggs, Cook County, Georgia. His grandfather is a farmer.
Buck's parents must have divorced sometime in the 1920s.
In the 1930 census, 15-year-old Buck is living with his mother and stepfather Harney Walker with siblings Elizabeth 17, Elijah 11, and Agnes 10, and half-siblings Luther 4, Lula 3, and Cleo 2, in Fletcher, Irwin County, Georgia. His stepfather is farming.
Buck's mother died on 3 Jul 1930 at age 38.
In the 1940 census, 24-year-old Buck is living at the Santa Rosa County, Florida, Work Camp.
The census says in 1935 he lived in Nashville, Berrien County, Georgia.
On his Oct 1940 draft registration Buck was living on Rural Route 2 in Manatee County, FL. Manatee is on the south side of Tampa Bay. His next of kin was his sister Bessie. The Manatee Crate Company employed him.
Buck married Martha Frances Reinhardt on 28 Jun 1941 in Hardee County, Florida. Hardee County is the next county east of Manatee County. Their daughter, Judith Ann, was born in early 1942.
Buck enlisted on 10 Sep 1941 at Camp Blanding, Florida. He'd had a grammar school education and was married. His civil occupation was listed under skilled meatcutters, except in slaughtering and packing houses. He was ultimately assigned to the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division.
Shortly after midnight on 10 Jul 1943, a Regimental Combat Team (RCT) under the command of Colonel James M. Gavin, United States Army, consisting of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment and 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, dropped out of a moonlit sky northeast of Gela on the southern shore of Sicily.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Florida show Paulk, Dan I, Pvt from Manatee County as killed in action on 21 Jul 1943 so we can assume he was killed somewhere north of Gela.
In the 1945 Bradenton city directory Martha Paulk (widow Dan) is a bookkeeper for Miller Trailer Company residing at 1528 7th Ave East.
