Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until July 11, 1944, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Benona served as a Electrician's Mate First Class, U.S.S. Maddox (DD-622), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in California prior to the war and enlisted in the Navy on September 2, 1942 in Los Angeles, California.

The Maddox, while on antisubmarine patrol about 16 miles of the shore of Sicily, was attacked by a German Junkers Ju 88 bomber. One of the bombs exploded Maddox's aft magazine, causing the ship to roll over and sink within two minutes during the war.

" 208 " sailors lost their lives in this sinking.

Benona was declared " Missing in Action " in this sinking.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
