He was on the crew of the B-17G #44-6470 during a mission to bomb the oil refinery at Zeitz, Germany. Their airplane was hit by flak while over the target and its #3 engine was knocked out. It nosed up out of the formation, then started down in a steep glide. That was the last report of them. Eight crew members were killed.
