On Nov 24, 1943 during Operation Galvanic in the Pacific the USS Liscome was torpedoed (about 20 miles SW of Butaritari Island also called Makin Island ) by a Japanese submarine resulting in a catastrophic loss of life. Of a crew of 916 men only 272 men survived. Those killed were buried at sea or listed as missing in action including Rudolph J Srsen.
He had two brothers - Emanuel Srsen and Frank Srsen of Tacoma, Washington.
The date listed originally for his death was Nov 23, 1944. An obituary was published in the Tacoma, Washington newspaper on Dec 15, 1944. However, the last US Navy Muster roll for him is dated 30 Sep 1943 aboard the Liscome Bay.
