SSGT Bass was the radio operator on the B-29 "The Life of Riley" assigned to the 20th Air Force, 504th Bomb Group which crashed southeast of Guguan after a bombing mission over Nagoya. The entire crew was officially declared dead on the day of the mission. The crew is memorialized on the tablets of the mission at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
