Eli Stoddard was a graduate of Dartmouth College. He began teaching in West Point, Iowa in 1837, succeeding George Stevenson. According to the Annals of Iowa, Stoddard was one of the first ten teachers in Lee County, Iowa. Stoddard married Jane Walker, a native of Adair County, Kentucky, on March 12, 1840. He was later a professor at Des Moines College in West Point. He served as Clerk for the Board of Commissioners of Lee County when Iowa was both a territory and a state. The 1850 census showed he was engaged in farming. According to a family history, Jane Walker Stoddard remarried after Eli's death. Her second husband is listed as James Brice, whom she married on February 20, 1862. Jane's grave is in Deer Lodge, Montana.
