Admiral. He was the son of Charles-Francois d'Arsac de Ternay, Marquis ffde Ternay and his wife, Louise Lefebvre de Laubriere. A knight (chevalier) of the Order of Malta, he served in the royal navy of France for forty-two years from 1738, first distinguishing himself as a captain by saving the king's ships that had taken refuge in the River Vilaine, following the Battle of Quiberon Bay. He captured Newfoundland in 1762, served as Governor of the Île Bourbon (Reunion) and Île de France (Mauritius) in 1772-1777. In 1776, he was promoted to rear admiral and in 1780, was chief of the naval squadron for the Expedition Particulier to assist the United States. His ships carried the army of Rochambeau across the Atlantic, where they would, in the following year, join George Washington's Army to fight and to win the battle of Yorktown.
