James was born in Malta, the son of James Lawrence & Violet Irena Horton Hayes. He married Flossie Emma Tutt January 11, 1975 in Iola.
He was retired from Petty Company in Effingham as a cutter operator, was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church in Flora, and was a Vietnam veteran serving in the Army.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, James Peck & Johnathon Hayes, five daughters Jennifer, Cindy, Jackie, Clara, and Irene. Also a brother Ralph and 2 sisters Kathy and Rose.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leslie Hayes.
Funeral services were held at Neal Funeral Home with burial in Iola Cemetery with military rites.
