Douglas was born on October 27, 1916 to Scottish immigrants, William James Purdie and Charlotte Taylor Purdie in Harrison, New Jersey. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Sea-bee during WWII in the South Pacific. Mr. Purdie was a lifetime member, Elder and Sunday School Teacher of the East Point Presbyterian Church.

In 1941, he started work with the Fulton County School System serving in various positions as teacher, counselor and principal at Russell High School and at Hapeville High School. He concluded his career in Counseling Services at the Administration Office in 1980. An Avid nature lover, he hiked the southern part of the Appalachian Trail, a love he shared with church groups and his Boy Scout Troop.

He was a Charter member of the East Point Historical Society serving as one of the Presidents and as the first Curator of the Historical Society's museum. He was very knowledgeable in East Point's history and was one of the city's greatest historians.
