Howard loved baseball and he was really good at it. in 1949, he started playing professional baseball in the minors after he got out of the Army for the WF Cardinals in what they called the Mississippi League Class D. 1950 was his first pro year with the Cardinals. He was called back into the Army at the end of the season and served a year during the Korean War as a Corporal. His second year in the Minors was in the Kitty League at Owensboro, Ky. His third year was played in Three Rivers, Canada in 1953. He always had to find a job to work in the winter and it was tough going. He went to Carlsbad, New Mexico and worked in the Potash mines and in the Spring of 1956 he tried out for the minor league team there in Carlsbad and they signed him. He had a pretty good year and they wanted him to come back the next season. But the pay wasn't any good back then and he was 26 years old with a wife and 2 kids to support and just couldn't make enough to support them so he had to quit baseball and said, "no more".
