Martha was always called Mattie by her grandchildren. When the 1880 census was taken she was 3 years old and living with her mother Mary Louisa Miller who was the widow of Findley Patterson Carlton. In later years Mattie told her grandchildren that her father was William Greene.

Martha's first marriage was to William Walker in 1891 and they had a son and a daughter. Her second marriage was to George Carlton on Dec 21, 1900 and they had 7 children. George and Mattie raised the children she had with William Walker along with their own.

She moved to Danville, Virginia to live close to her children and grandchildren after her husband George died in 1928 in West Hickory, North Carolina.

NOTE: In 1920 Mary Louisa (Miller) Carlton was 86 years old and a widow living with her daughter Mattie and her son in law George Carlton.
