Catherine Helmstetter-Alfers, 85, a resident of Nortonville, Kansas, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010.

Catherine Helmstetter-Alfers was born in Effingham, Kansas to Sebastain & Isabel Helmstetter. She attended St. Ann's Catholic Parochial School and Atchison County Community High School (Class of 1942) both in Effingham. Later, she completed nurses training at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri, graduating May 19, 1946.

Before marriage, Catherine served as the Registered Nurse to Dr. Mothershead in Denton, Kansas. After raising her children, she was employed by Valley Hope, Atchison, KS until retirement in 1995 and had lived in Nortonville since 1979. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nortonville, St Joseph's Catholic Woman's Guild, and the Quarter of Century Club / St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing Alumni.

Catherine E. Alfers is survived by a sister, Margie Saveliski of Annapolis, Maryland, two daughters, Vickie Ewoldsen and Judy Henry, and three sons, Mike, Pat and Curt Alfers, thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by five brothers, Larry, George, Louis, Eugene and Bill, a sister, Mary, her parents, Sebastain & Isabel Helmstetter, one daughter, Jacque, a grandson Brandon and a great grandson Samuel.

Services to be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Nortonville at 10:30 a.m., dinner following. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Atchison, next to her parents. A rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening with visitation following until 8:00 p.m.
