SERVED CIVIL WAR 1863-1865 COMPANY E OHIO 128TH INFANTRY
Axtell enlisted in Company E, 128th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as Manning J. Axtell, December 18, 1863, for a 3-year term of service. He was mustered out July 13, 1865, at the end of the war. Rank: Private.
In the 1880 U.S. Census for Cleveland, Ohio, he was listed as 48 years old, employed as a night watchman, born in Ohio, with both parents born in Massachusetts. His wife, Luella, 46, was born in Maine as were both of her
parents. Their children in the household were: Elwin, 24, a carpenter, and Caroline, 21, both born in Wisconsin, and Nellie, 7, born in Ohio.
On May 10, 1890, Manning applied for an invalid soldier's pension which was issued in Ohio as Certificate #588128. He appeared in the 1890 U.S. Veterans Census as Jefferson Axtel, residing at 68 Walnut Street, Cleveland. At the time of his death from paralysis, his address was recorded as 87 Brooker, Cleveland.
He was buried in a plot set aside for Civil War veterans in Section 72 at Woodland Cemetery, July 15, 1898. Luella applied for a widow's pension based on his military service, August 5, 1898, which was issued as Certificate #477425 in Ohio.
