Obituary:
"DEATH OF MRS. G.W. HAYS
Illness of Short Duration..Shock Very Great to All
A Good Christian Lady

Short History of her Life and Death

Last evening while the church bells were ringing, calling to God's temple the citizens of Tipton, the spirit of Mrs. George W. Hays, departed the body to seek that sweet peace in the better world. And, oh, what a rending of hearts in the ranks of her loved ones. Little children ran weeping through the streets, women wrung their hands in grief, while stout-hearted men from tears could not be constrained, and from house to house the sad message ws transmitted: "Mrs. Hays is dead!"

All the forces of medical science, all the aid of loving friends failed of their desired effect, and that great God who witnessed the parting must have endured again a taste of the agony of Calvary. Just in the prime of womanhood when the sweet life bound her closely to husband and children; just as the friendships of life had been thoroughly formulated; just as life had ripened and sweetened in every respect and the sunshine of heaven beamed across the threshold into a happy home, was this good lady taken away.

Miss Jemima Bowen was born ten miles south of Tipton, in Moniteau county, on July 30, 1865, surrounded by the gentle influence of fond parents and loving friends. At the age of seventeen, she was united in marriage with Geo. W. Hays, and unto them were born three children, two of whom are living. The funeral services will be held at the Christian church in this city tomorrow at 11 o'clock; the interment will take place at the Newkirk cemetery, eight miles south of Tipton. A husband, two sons, a father, two brothers and three sisters are among the near and dear mourners.

Mrs. Hays was a devoted member of the Christian church and for years her good work has called forth expressions of praise from the outside world. She was a devoted wife and mother, a loving friend and a faithful servant of God. Her illness has been of short duration, a fever with its train of complications taking her away. The death occurred at the beautiful Hays home in this city Friday evening, August 12, 1898, at 7:50 o'clock."
