Educator, business owner, and politican. Dr. Otis "Otie" Miller was a college professor at Southwestern Illinois College (formerly Belleville Area College) who taught history. Prior to that he taught history at Belleville Township West High School in Belleville IL. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale IL and his doctorate degree from St Louis University, St. Louis MO. He co-owned and operated the Belleville Coin Shop in Belleville IL for many years and was a regular proprieter at the Belleville Flea Market every third weekend of the month, buying and selling coins, currency, as well as coin supplies. He also served as an Illinois State Representative from 1961 to 1962 and acting mayor of Belleville from 1978 to 1979 and served as an alderman for the 7th Ward in Belleville IL as well as holding other civic positions. He married Sandra Schilling on June 16, 1962. From this union, two daughters were born; Deborah Jo Houk and Stacy Lynn Collins. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Abby Collins. He died at Barnes/Jewish Hospital in St. Louis MO after an extended illness.
