Winton L. "Luke" Maughan, age 90, of Austin, Texas, died on May 8, 2010.

Luke was born on April 16, 1920, in Senatobia, Mississippi, to Vernon and Cora (Montgomery) Maughan. One of their twelve children, he grew up in Tennessee.

Luke married Verta "Mae" Beene on November 2, 1939.

As a retired Master Sergeant, he served in the United States Air Force from 1941 through 1964. A World War II veteran, he was honored with a Purple Heart.

He subsequently served the State of Texas as a Peace Officer at the Texas State Capitol for 20 years before retiring in 1985.

Luke and Mae bought their present home in Austin in 1955.

They have been a blessing to their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family members as well as the many others whose lives were touched by their joyous, generous and loving spirit.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter, Billie Norsworthy, and his son, Dale Maughan.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary LeMore and her husband, Wallace, and Margaret Noack and her husband, John; his brother, Ed Maughan; his sister, Billie Joyce Browder; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
